2019 GMC Canyon Vs. 2019 Honda Ridgeline

By Justin Cupler | September 19th, 2019

Midsize pickups offer a great balance of ease of use and capability with their smaller footprints and high towing capacities. Two great options in this segment include the 2019 GMC Canyon and 2019 Honda Ridgeline. Which of these midsize pickups is best for our Delray Beach area shoppers? Continue reading to find out.

Exterior

The Honda Ridgeline doesn’t look like your traditional pickup truck, and that’s because it is not your typical truck. It takes its platform from the Honda Pilot crossover, which explains its very crossover-like front end and front-driven platform. It features a dual-action tailgate that opens downward or swings outward and shows off its status as a tailgate party machine with its standard in-bed trunk that doubles as a cooler and available in-bed audio system. While it may not be the rugged pickup the Canyon is, the Ridgeline has a target audience.

The 2019 GMC Canyon is a far more typical pickup with its upright design and pair of cab options, including extended cab and crew cab. It lacks all the tailgating goodies the Ridgeline has but rewards buyers with a traditional appearance and the towing and hauling performance truck buyers expect. What the Canyon does offer is a Denali trim level that pushes luxury to the max with its polished exhaust tip, 20-inch diamond-cut aluminum wheels with painted accents, 5-inch chrome assist steps, cargo box LED lighting, chrome grille, and Spray-on bed liner.

In sizing, the Canyon has a significantly longer body and wheelbase and rides higher off the ground, but it is narrower and weighs much less in most trims.

Measurement GMC Canyon Honda Ridgeline Difference
Length 212.4 to 224.6 inches 210 inches +2.4 inches to +14.6 inches
Width 74.3 inches 78.6 inches -4.3 inches
Height 70.3 to 70.7 inches 70.2 to 70.8 inches +0.1 inches
Wheelbase 128.3 to 140.5 inches 125.2 inches +3.1 to +15.3 inches
Ground Clearance 8.1 to 8.4 inches 7.28 to 7.87 inches +0.23 to +1.12 inches
Curb weight 3,922 to 4,508 pounds 4,235 to 4,508 pounds -586 to +273 pounds

Advantage: 2019 Honda Ridgeline

  •       More cab and bed options
  •       Off-road-ready All Terrain trim
  •       Traditional truck design

Advantage: 2019 Honda Ridgeline

  •       Stylish crossover-inspired look
  •       Tailgate-ready features
  •       Sleek Black Edition model

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Honda Ridgeline’s crossover ties continue, as its cabin is quite similar to the Pilot with its swoopy dash, sleek-looking steering wheel, and roomy rear seats. On the flip side, the GMC Canyon is all truck with its upright dash, glove-friendly knobs, and pair of cab options with more seating arrangements.

The Honda Ridgeline benefits from its crossover-based structure, as it offers tons more rear-seat room, including an extra 5.3 inches of legroom and 3.3 inches of hip room. In the front seats, the Canyon gets a 4.1-inch advantage in legroom and a 1.3-inch advantage in headroom. The Ridgeline offers no competitor to for the Canyon’s extended cab model, leaving a key niche vacant.

The Ridgeline’s crossover-based cabin is also more peaceful with its active noise cancelation and acoustic glass, but its standard tech features are scant compared to the Canyon. The base Canyon comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay, while the Ridgeline’s standard infotainment screen is a 5-inch non-touchscreen, and it doesn’t offer standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay until the mid-range trims.

Performance

The GMC Canyon offers a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. With this engine, the Canyon can tow up to 3,500 pounds and delivers up to 23 mpg combined. The optional 3.6-liter V-6 engine delivers 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque for a 7,000-pound towing capacity and a 6.3-second 0-to-60 sprint.

Topping the Canyon range is the 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder with 186 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, which helps this midsize pickup tow up to 7,600 pounds. This diesel unit is not only powerful, but it delivers an impressive 30 mpg highway.

No matter which engine you pick, the 2019 GMC Canyon comes standard with rear-wheel drive and has optional all-wheel drive.

The 2019 Honda Ridgeline has just one engine, a 3.5-liter V-6 that delivers 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. This standard V-6 sprints the Ridgeline to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds and helps it tow up to 3,500 pounds with front-wheel drive or 5,000 pounds with all-wheel drive. Where the Ridgeline shines the brightest is ride quality, as its crossover-based chassis delivers a superior ride in this class.
